BPL have replied to the World Cricket Association’s letter, stating that they are looking to resolve the matter
Players’ payment issue, a perennial problem in Bangladesh Premier League, raised its ugly head once again as the World Cricket Association (WCA) wrote to the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the league, requesting them to solve the problem and non-payment and late payment to nearly 15 overseas players from the last edition of the league held in 2024.
WCA is the world body representing the player associations of various cricket-playing nations. WCA’s chief executive, Tom Moffat, in a chat with Cricbuzz, said, “A significant number of late and non-payment issues have been reported to us with respect to the last BPL event, and most of them remain outstanding. This is a broader ongoing issue across our whole sport and it is disappointing these issues continue to be reported.”
“We continue to urge the game’s leadership to step in and ensure they are resolved and the players are paid what they are owed urgently,” he added.
Since its inception, the BPL has also been troubled by franchises either pulling out or getting dismissed because of financial problems and irregularities. In the upcoming edition, which will begin from December 30 onwards, three teams that participated in the previous edition– Comilla Victorians, Chattogram Challengers and Durdanto Dhaka will not be participating this time around.
They have been replaced by Durbar Rajshahi, Chittagong Kings and Dhaka Capitals. “That issue has been addressed and the process has started. It is handled by the CEO and he can give you the correct answer,” Nazmul Abedin, BPL governing council member secretary was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz regarding the non-payment issue.
However, Debabrata Paul, a member of the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh, confirmed that three overseas have yet not cleared their dues. “There are three cricketers from three franchises that still did not get their payment but we are hoping they will also get back their payment soon.”
