It is with profound sadness that the sporting fraternity has learnt of the passing of Abdul Bhamjee, a man known for his warm personality, generosity, dynamism and charisma.
Abdul excelled as a player in both cricket and football, later utilizing and focusing his considerable talents and skills in sports administration. Coupled with his oratory skills and chutzpah as a sporting promoter, his larger-than-life personality made him a household name. As a solid, hard worker, he accomplished his goals of non-racialism and normalisation of sport across the racial divide. He embodied the fight against injustice and ensured the mantra of “no normal sport in an abnormal society” reached its desired effect and conclusion.
Abdul’s contribution to South African sport was unrivalled as his sacrifices and determination fought towards equality and social justice. He was the right man at the right time and a giant among men.
It is with great pride that Central Gauteng Lions Cricket can conclude that Abdul Bhamjee was honoured by his community at Imperial Wanderers Stadium – both for his role in society as well as the path paved for future generations.
Go well Mr Bhamjee, you will forever be appreciated, loved and remembered by many within the CGL cricket community.
