Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is reportedly interested in acquiring a stake in The Hundred’s London Spirit franchise. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is considering private ownership of nearly 49% of each franchise in the league, with an option for further ownership expansion.
However, this additional ownership would require agreements with the county clubs holding the remaining 51% stake. Reports have circulated about various Indian Premier League franchises expressing interest in acquiring stakes in The Hundred’s franchises.
According to recent reports from Sky News, Boehly is supporting a bid led by Jonathan Goldstein for a larger stake in London Spirit. Boehly previously purchased Chelsea Football Club for $5.6 billion along with Behdad Eghabli.
The reports suggest that Boehly and Eghabli are currently negotiating to buy each other’s shares in Chelsea. Meanwhile, Manchester United co-owners, the Glazer family, along with IPL franchises like LSG, MI, and CSK, are also reportedly interested in purchasing stakes in London Spirit, which is considered the most valuable team in the league and is expected to attract the highest price of the eight teams up for sale.
A total of 35 bids have been shortlisted for the eight teams, with host countries having the option to decide whether to sell their 51% share, giving new investors control of the franchises. Additionally, CVC Capital Partners, owners of IPL’s Gujarat Titans, are reportedly aiming to acquire stakes in Oval Invincibles.
