The Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA), founded in 1967 by former England fast bowler Fred Rumsey as the Cricketers' Association, represents past and present first-class cricketers in England and Wales. In the 1970s, the PCA established a standard employment contract and minimum wage for professional cricketers. It also helped create a pension scheme in 1995 and launched the magazine All Out Cricket and the ACE UK Educational Programme in 2002.

The 2024 cinch PCA Awards shortlists have been announced, with the players selecting 14 individuals that have stood out across the past 12 months.

A combination of domestic and international performers have been voted for with previous winners in contention. Joe Root won the cinch PCA Men’s Player of the Year in 2021 and the young player award in 2012, whilst Nat Sciver-Brunt took home the cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year award in 2017 and 2022.

With votes submitted in early September, England’s Gus Atkinson and Root have been shortlisted for the cinch PCA Men’s Player of the Year for their international performances while Hampshire’s Liam Dawson and Glamorgan’s Colin Ingram and were selected for their incredible domestic seasons.

The cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year shortlist sees Northern Diamonds’ Hollie Armitage, The Blaze’s Kathryn Bryce, South East Stars’ Paige Scholfield and England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt competing for the prize.

The most prestigious awards ceremony in English cricket also recognises the most talented emerging players in England and Wales, with those under the age of 24 on 1 April eligible.

Three England debutants complete the nominees for the cinch PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year as Warwickshire’s Jacob Bethell, Essex’s Jordan Cox and Surrey’s Jamie Smith battle it out for the award, the latter having been shortlisted in 2023.

The cinch PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year will be contested by South East Stars teammates Tilly Corteen-Coleman and Ryana MacDonald-Gay, alongside Thunder’s Seren Smale.

All shortlisted players have been voted for by their peers, as the four headline award winners will be revealed at the Troxy on Tuesday 1 October, after the conclusion of the summer fixtures.

cinch PCA Men’s Player of the Year

A phenomenal debut international summer from Gus Atkinson produced 34 Test wickets, including figures of 12-106 against the West Indies at Lord’s.

The 26-year-old also scored a maiden Test hundred and took 24 wickets for Surrey in all formats.

Meanwhile, Hampshire all-rounder Liam Dawson has scored 1,231 runs and taken 67 wickets in 2024, the 34-year-old leads the way in the PCA Men’s Overall Domestic MVP and County Championship MVP, having won both last year.

Another impressive year was produced by South African Colin Ingram who has enjoyed a brilliant summer with the bat, amassing almost 2,000 runs, including six hundreds.

The 39-year-old leads the run scoring charts in the County Championship with a game to go.

A previous winner at the PCA Awards, England’s Joe Root scored 1,262 international runs over the past 12 months, which included four hundreds.

The Yorkshireman also surpassed Sir Alastair Cook’s England record of Test centuries, securing his 34th Test ton.

cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year

Northern Diamonds’ Hollie Armitage finished the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy season as the second highest run-scorer with 435 runs.

The 27-year-old also made her ODl and T20I debuts and scored an unbeaten 120 for England A.

Also producing a remarkable last 12 months was Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce, who scored 1,650 runs and took 51 wickets.

The 26-year-old finished the Charlotte Edwards Cup as the leading batter with 478 runs and lifted the trophy.

Meanwhile, having sustained a back injury that prevent her from bowling in 2024, Paige Scholfield proved herself with the bat and was rewarded with an England debut.

The 28-year-old scored an impressive 259 runs in the Charlotte Edwards Cup and 252 in List A cricket.

Another previous winner at the PCA Awards, England super-star Nat Sciver-Brunt picked up the Metro Bank Women’s ODI Player of the Summer award, having scored 233 from just four innings.

The 32-year-old was The Hundred’s top scorer with 303 runs.

cinch PCA Men’s Young Player of the Year

Jacob Bethell’s breakthrough season involved over 1,000 runs across all formats and an England debut against Australia. The 20-year-old also scored 361 runs in the Blast.

Having moved across the bridge from Kent to Essex, Jordan Cox scored a remarkable 1,735 global runs in the last 12 months, including four centuries, one of which was a double hundred.

England’s new wicketkeeper, Jamie Smith scored 487 runs in Tests, including a maiden international hundred, and 677 in the County Championship. The 24-year-old is nominated for the second consecutive year.

cinch PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year

Left-arm spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman burst on to the scene this summer taking an impressive 31 wickets. The 17-year-old also took a maiden five-fer.

Fellow Stars bowler, Ryana MacDonald-Gay had a brilliant season, resulting in 39 wickets and an England debut. The 20-year-old also took a maiden five-fer.

Meanwhile, Seren Smale’s 515 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy runs were only bettered by two players as she hit four half-centuries and made her England T20I debut.

Shortlisted players found out the good news of their nomination via a mixture of team huddles, family members and friends as they were handed a special ticket as a VIP invite to the most prestigious awards ceremony in English cricket.
