CA Congratulates Australia’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Champions

Cricket Australia has congratulated the Australian Women’s Team on their successful defense of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

The undefeated Australians beat South Africa in the final at a packed Newlands in Cape Town to win a record sixth T20 World Cup after victories in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018 and their famous triumph before a crowd of 86,174 at the MCG in 2020.

Australia became the first nation to hold the ICC Women’s World Cup, ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and Commonwealth Games title simultaneously.

The latest victory came after registered participation among girls aged 12 and younger reached 20,000 for the first time, exceeding the previous best seasonal total of 16,000 – an indication of the inspiration the world champion team has provided for girls to play cricket across Australia.

Nick Hockley, CA Chief Executive Officer said:

“Congratulations to captain Meg Lanning, coach Shelley Nitschke and the whole T20 World Cup squad on yet another outstanding accomplishment,” he said.

“The Australian Women’s Cricket Team continues to set amazing standards of performance and consistency and deserves to be recognised as one of the all-time greatest teams in world sport.

“It is not just their exceptional on-field results, but the way they represent themselves, their families and their country that makes this team inspirational role models to young girls and boys across Australia and around the world.

“There is no doubt that they are inspiring many to pick up a bat and ball hoping to emulate their heroes.”

“All the best to those players who are now taking part in the inaugural WPL. We are very proud that cricket offers the most lucrative and exciting opportunities of any team sport in Australia for female professional athletes.”
