Cricket Australia comments on ball-tampering allegation involving India A

Must Read

A significant controversy arose during the unofficial Test match between India A and Australia A when umpires allegedly accused the Indian players of ball tampering on Sunday morning.

Before play began, the umpires changed the ball, stating that it had to be replaced due to tampering, which displeased the Indian players. Wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan questioned the umpire’s decision, leading to a warning that his dissent would be reported.

Cricket Australia later issued a clarification, explaining that the ball was changed due to “deterioration,” and both team managers and captains were informed of this decision before the day’s play commenced. It appears that the Indian players were unaware of the ball change, resulting in a discussion with umpire Shawn Craig. When Kishan described the umpire’s decision as “very stupid,” he was informed that his comment would be noted.

Craig initially warned Kishan, stating, “You will be on report for dissent; that is inappropriate behaviour,” which was captured on the stump mic. However, it has since been confirmed that no action will be taken against Kishan or any other player involved.

It was also noted that the umpire suggested the Indian players had been “scratching” the ball, which contributed to its deterioration, but no 5-run penalty was enforced against the visitors for this alleged action. According to Law 41.3.4, umpires typically impose a 5-run penalty if they believe the condition of the ball has been unfairly altered.

In terms of match performance, Australia A’s captain Nathan McSweeney scored 88 not out, and Beau Webster contributed 61 not out, leading the team to a seven-wicket victory over India A in the first unofficial Test.
