Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket welcome and strongly support today’s funding announcement by the Australian and Queensland Governments that the Gabba will undergo a substantial redevelopment for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Speaking from Delhi where Australia is taking on India today in the Second Test of the Qantas tour, Nick Hockley, Cricket Australia’s CEO, said the funding confirmation would deliver a world class cricketing venue for many years to come.

“The Gabba is one of the most iconic and historic grounds in world cricket and we are delighted that the Queensland Government has committed to such a major redevelopment,” Hockley said.

“There is no doubt that Brisbane 2032 will leave an incredible legacy of a new, state-of-the-art Gabba that will ensure brilliant experiences for cricket players, fans, partners and the broader sporting community for generations to come.

“Australian Cricket has been fortunate to have had many of its major venues undergo upgrades in recent years and we are thrilled and very grateful that the Gabba will join that list.”

Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson said the Gabba redevelopment would provide certainty for cricket for decades to come after the Olympics and Paralympics.

“The Gabba has been a great sporting asset for Queensland for many years and its status will continue to benefit the State,’’ he said.

“It’s reputation as one of the finest cricket grounds in the world, with a pitch that has few rivals, will be greatly enhanced by the redevelopment.”

“Queensland Cricket and Cricket Australia look forward to working closely with the Queensland Government as this momentous project takes shape and is excited about the opportunities that will emerge for cricket throughout this process.”
