The shortlist for the naming of the men’s One-Day Cup trophy is down to three after Australian cricket fans had their say.
Fan engagement and feedback over the past month has clearly separated three players from the rest: Michael Bevan, Dean Jones and Andrew Symonds.
Thousands of passionate cricket supporters gave their opinion about whose name should be on the trophy in perpetuity, with more than 10,000 responses on Cricket Australia’s social media channels and more than 8,000 fans voting in an online poll on cricket.com.au.
The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame committee, led by Chair Peter King, has kindly agreed to assess the credentials of the three players shortlisted before a recommendation is provided to the CA Board.
In the coming days CA’s digital channels will feature articles and highlight packages championing the careers of Bevan, Jones and Symonds and encourage fans to engage in further discussion in the lead up to the decision.
Key criteria for the award include:
- An elite record in the Men’s One-Day Domestic competition.
- A top performer at international level for Australia in Men’s One-Day cricket.
- A player who is synonymous with the 50-over format – i.e. has had a major impact on the game, including through performance and inspiring evolution in the way the format is played.
Fans can watch the entire domestic summer of cricket, including the One-Day Cup, live on Kayo Sports, cricket.com.au and the CA Live app.
James Allsopp, CA’s Chief of Cricket, said:
“Thank you to all cricket supporters who have taken the time to voice their support and share their opinions via social media and email.
“The level of engagement across CA’s social channels and digital platforms clearly demonstrates the passion Australians have for our cricketing heroes at both domestic and international level.
“It is absolutely fitting that fan support has narrowed the shortlist to Michael Bevan, Dean Jones and Andrew Symonds and we know that whoever the trophy is named after in perpetuity will be thoroughly deserving of the honour.”
Peter King, Australian Cricket Hall of Fame Chair, said:
“The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame Committee is delighted to be adjudicating the player to be awarded the honour of having his name attached to the men’s One-Day Cup trophy.
“Australian cricket fans have done a fantastic job narrowing the shortlist down to three exceptional players.
“The ACHoF Committee will consider and debate the outstanding records and achievements of the three players before providing a recommendation to the CA Board.”
