In what would now be considered to be a very significant and exciting development for Canadian Women’s cricket, the possibilities for the establishment of a Canada Women’s Premier League are now being explored. Cricket Canada has indicated that it has begun discussions with an interested third party, towards the League’s establishment in the very near future.

The intent is to have a Franchise based League that would provide competitive match exposure to Canada’s top women cricketers. The exploration of the possibilities for the establishment of the Canada Premier League is the latest example of Cricket Canada’s demonstrated commitment to furthering the development and promotion of Women’s cricket across the country.

As part of its ongoing commitment, Cricket Canada hosted the 2021 Canadian National Women’s Championships last summer. The first of its kind to be held since 2018.

Thirty-six women’s cricketers participated in the three days Championships, which were played at King City from August 13 – 15. Performances at the August 13-15, 2021 Canadian National Women’s Cricket Championships were subsequently used by the National Selection Panel to select the Canadian team that participated in 2021 Antigua hosted ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier.

If and when established the Canada Premier League will serve to further boost the already growing levels of involvement in women’s cricket, by increasing awareness of the opportunities the sport offers for individuals to represent Canada at the highest levels of international competition.
