Because of the evolving concerns regarding COVID-19 and strict preventive measures taken by the Government of Malaysia designed to contain the spread of the pandemic, Cricket Canada, Malaysia Cricket Association, and Bombay Sports Co. Ltd have decided to cancel the 2021 Global T20 Championship.
The Global T20 Canada Management team and government medical officials conducted a thorough assessment of the possibility of hosting the competition in Kuala Lumpur, while exploring the postponement and shifting of dates of the tournament. While keeping the health and safety of the cricket community of primary importance, all stakeholders acknowledged that hosting the tournament this summer is not possible.
President Mr Mohammed Iqbal Ali of Malaysian Cricket Association expressed, “Malaysian Cricket is disappointed to say theleast at not being able to host The Global T20 Championship, 2021, here in Kuala Lumpur, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic which is beyond our control. We concur with Cricket Canada and Bombay Sports in that the health and safety of all in the cricket community precedes all other factors. We take this opportunity to thank Cricket Canada and Bombay Sports for considering Malaysia as a venue for the Global T20 Championship. We wish you the very best for the 2022 event.”
When asked to share his sentiments on the cancellation of GT20 Canada 2021 Cricket Canada President, Rashpal Bajwa said,“Canada along with Bombay Sports and Malaysian Cricket Association exhausted every avenue to hold the 2021 edition of GT20 in Malaysia. We at Cricket Canada are very disappointed in announcing the cancelation of 2021 edition of GT20.
We assure all the cricket lovers of Canada and rest of the world that we are committed in bringing back a Bigger, Better, Stronger GT20 to Canada in 2022. Looking forward to welcoming the cricketing fraternity for 2022 edition of GT20 in Canada.”
Gurmeet Singh, President BSCL, said, “It has indeed been the toughest of times that the modern world has seen and gone through in the past 18 months, postponing the event is a decision we do not take lightly and have explored every avenue available to us in terms of safely and successfully conducting a tournament this year, but having gone through all options, dates and venues available we have come to this conclusion of postponement till 2022.”
The GT20 management has begun preparations for the 2022 edition to be held at the CAA Centre in the City of Brampton.
