Having just recently celebrated his 19th Birthday on November 1, 2002, Canada’s Squad captain Mihir Patel, will be seeking to lead from the front by becoming one of the 2022 ICC U19 World Cup’s most outstanding performers. As right handed batting all-rounder who is also a very useful right-arm fast medium bowler, Patel certainly has the credentials to do so.
Known as Migi and/or Migs to his teammates, a nickname that resulted from a former Coach’s mispronunciation of Mihir, Patel will bring to the 2022 tournament his previous U19 World Cup experience. He was a member of the Canadian team which participated at the 2020 U19 World Cup, that was held in South Africa.
As the youngest member of the Canadian 2020 U19 World Cup squad Patel made a most impressive debut, scoring 90 not out against the UAE in his very first appearance in National team colors. He also went on to become Canada’s highest run scorer for the entire tournament.
As a York University student who also enjoys reading, watching movies and somewhat surprisingly for a young man still in his teens, cooking, Mihir Patel’s first involvement with cricket was a youngster trying to emulate the feats of his father and elder brother who were both active cricketers. Family matches in the parking lot of the condominium apartment where they lived, served as the very first avenue for the expression of his prodigious natural talent which quickly became obvious to all.
Mihir lists India’s legendary Sachin Tendulkar as his favorite cricketer of all-time, not only because of his demonstrated longevity as one of the greatest batsman the game has ever seen, but also as well for the impact he had on both the sport and his country, He, however, now likens his playing role to that of India’s Shubman Gill based on their shared similarities for playing pull shots and wristy drives as their favorite strokes.
All eyes will indeed be on Mihir Patel at the 2022 Caribbean hosted ICC U19 World Cup, as he seeks to lead Canada to its best ever performance at the tournament. In doing so he will also be seeking to have an even more outstanding tournament with his own personal performances than he did in South Africa at the 2020 World Cup.
