Cricket Ireland: All you need to know – Ireland Men’s tour to Bangladesh

Cricket Ireland, officially known as The Irish Cricket Union Company Limited by Guarantee, is the governing body for cricket on the island of Ireland. It oversees the national men's and women's teams and organizes the Inter-Provincial Series, Super 3s, and All-Ireland club competitions. Ireland achieved Test status for women in 2000 and for men in 2017 when it became a Full Member of the ICC.

Ireland Men are currently in Bangladesh for a seven-match, multi-format series, which will include a first-ever Test match between the sides.

The matches will be played at three different venues across Bangladesh – Sylhet, Chattogram, and Dhaka.

The tour gets underway on Wednesday, 15 March with a warm-up match against a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium (SICS), before a three-match One Day International series starts on Saturday 18 March at the same venue.

The sides will then travel to the south-east port city of Chattogram for three T20 Internationals at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS), before finally heading to the capital city of Dhaka for the Test match at the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

  • 15 March: warm-up match v BCB XI – (SICS, Sylhet: start 9.30am local time) (3.30am Irish time)

ODI Series
  • 18 March: Bangladesh Men v Ireland Men – 1st ODI (SICS, Sylhet; start 2pm local time) (8am Irish time)
  • 20 March: Bangladesh Men v Ireland Men – 2nd ODI (SICS, Sylhet; start 2pm local time) (8am Irish time)
  • 23 March: Bangladesh Men v Ireland Men – 3rd ODI (SICS, Sylhet; start 2.30pm local time) (8am Irish time)

T20I Series
  • 27 March: Bangladesh Men v Ireland Men – 1st T20I (ZACS, Chattogram; start 2pm local time) (9am Irish time)
  • 29 March: Bangladesh Men v Ireland Men – 2nd T20I (ZACS, Chattogram; start 2pm local time) (9am Irish time)
  • 31 March: Bangladesh Men v Ireland Men – 3rd T20I (ZACS, Chattogram; start 2pm local time) (9am Irish time)

Test Match
  • 4-8 April: Bangladesh Men v Ireland Men – Test Match (SBNCS, Dhaka; start 10am daily local time) (5am Irish time)

  • Ireland and Bangladesh have met each other 15 times:

  • Ireland’s most famous wins over Bangladesh were:
      ODI: Ireland beat Bangladesh at the 2007 Cricket World Cup by 74 runs
      T20I: Ireland beat Bangladesh at the 2009 T20 World Cup by 6 wickets

  • Andrew Balbirnie will be captaining Ireland in a Test match for the first time against Bangladesh.

  • 10 of the 15 players in the Test squad have not played Test cricket yet.

  • In his last 15 ODI’s Harry Tector has scored 869 runs at an average of 57.93, which included 8 half-centuries and three centuries. He top scored with 113 against New Zealand in Dublin in July 2022.

  • Having previously represented Zimbabwe on the International stage, 32 year-old wicketkeeper-batter PJ Moor was called up to the Irish Test squad for this tour after achieving qualification to represent Ireland.

  • 20 year-old slow left-arm bowler Matthew Humphreys was part of the Ireland U19 squad who participated in the ICC Under-19 Men’s World Cup in January 2022. He was the go-to spinner during that tournament, taking 4-25 against Uganda and 3-32 against Zimbabwe as Ireland finished tenth overall.
