Carrie Archer has today confirmed she will step down as Women’s National Selector after almost seven years involved on the panel.

Originally appointed as a selector in May 2016, Archer was announced as Chair of Selectors in 2018.

Player, coach, development officer, team manager and selector, Archer has held many roles within cricket – and plans to continue to stay involved. She said:

“I have really enjoyed the role of initially being selector and then chair of selectors as I’ve had an opportunity to engage with so many people who have a genuine passion and interest in Irish girls and women’s cricket. It has been exciting to watch the transformation of the women’s game since first stepping into the role in 2016.

“I’m stepping away as it is time for somebody to come into the role with fresh ideas and with new insights now that the game is professional. I have been working with the On the Front Foot programme and still very much see myself involved and engaged with women’s cricket into the future, but in a completely different capacity .

“While a really challenging role, I have enjoyed watching how the players have developed over the past seven years, but also watching how many opportunities are becoming open and available at many different levels in girls and women’s cricket. I trust that many more opportunities will be made available for participation at all levels into the future.

“I’d like to thank the coaches and the support staff who have enabled me to fulfil my role to the best of my capability but most especially to thank the other selectors who I’ve worked with and who have given their time so generously over the past number of years and wish the new National Selector all the best in the role.”

Richard Holdsworth, High Performance Director at Cricket Ireland, said:

“The role of national selector is more involved than most of us would appreciate and despite juggling duties with a full-time job, Carrie undertook the ever-evolving role with diligence and professionalism. Her extensive involvement in Irish cricket gave her an immense insight into the game, which she was able to draw on in her role as selector.

“It was a pleasure to work with Carrie and on behalf of Cricket Ireland, I thank Carrie for her commitment to the role. We’re equally pleased to hear that she intends to stay involved in the game, and wish her well for whatever she chooses to do next.”

Ed Joyce, Ireland Women’s Head Coach, said:

“The working relationship between Head Coach and National Selector is crucial – not only to short-term selection needs, but the longer-term planning and development of the senior squad. I have very much enjoyed working closely with Carrie and have valued her insights that have been important in the evolution of this squad over the last four years. I know this is not the last time our paths will cross and look forward to where next she can bring her knowledge to benefit Irish cricket.”

The recruitment process for the role of National Women’s Selector has now opened, with an information pack available here.
