Cricket Ireland: Gaby Lewis named The Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month

Cricket Ireland, officially known as The Irish Cricket Union Company Limited by Guarantee, is the governing body for cricket on the island of Ireland. It oversees the national men's and women's teams and organizes the Inter-Provincial Series, Super 3s, and All-Ireland club competitions. Ireland achieved Test status for women in 2000 and for men in 2017 when it became a Full Member of the ICC.

Ireland international Gaby Lewis has been named The Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month primarily recognising her stellar performance on the recent Pakistan tour.

Gaby Lewis said:

“I am delighted to have been recognised as The Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month and be considered for the annual award alongside legendary Irish female athletes and sports stars.

“To make a list like this is a personal honour, but in reality, speaks to the progress that women’s sport and female athletes have made across Ireland in such a wide range of sports. Boxing, horse racing, football, athletics, cricket…it has been a great year for Irish sport on the whole, but women’s sport in particular.

“In respect to my own chosen sport, it may be an individual award, but cricket is very much a team sport. We have a great Our recent successful tour to Pakistan, qualification for next year’s T20 World Cup and the growth of profile and participation across the grassroots of our sport has demonstrated Irish cricket’s potential – where attention and investment in the women’s game has gone, positive outcomes have followed.

“Congratulations to all the monthly winners this year, and thanks to The Irish Times for your ongoing support for women’s sport.”


Further to the above Award, Lewis has also been shortlisted for the International Cricket Council’s Women’s Cricketer of the Month Award, which fans can vote on here.
