Cricket Ireland have today announced that Glenn Querl has signed a three-year contract extension to continue on as Ireland Women’s Performance and Pathway Coach.

Querl, 35, previously worked with the national under-age boys and girls system prior to be named Head Coach of Super Series side Scorchers in 2020.

In two seasons with the Scorchers, he guided them to success, winning the 50-over and T20 competitions back-to-back. He was appointed Women’s Performance and Pathway Coach for Cricket Ireland in 2021, and was most recently head coach of the Under-19s who took part in the inaugural Women’s Under-19 World Cup, and was also assistant coach alongside Ed Joyce at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in February.

Due to his contract extension, Querl will step away from his coaching duties with the Scorchers in the Super Series.

Speaking about the news of his contract extension this week, Querl said:

“I am absolutely delighted to have signed a contract extension for the next three years with Cricket Ireland and I’m look forward to continuing the progress we have made over recent years with a very exciting, talented group of cricketers. There is so much potential in this group of players. I’m relishing the opportunity to work with Ed [Joyce] and the rest of the team, whilst also developing my coaching skills and experience at the highest level.

“It was a real privilege to be able to lead the Under-19s Women to their first World Cup in South Africa and I’m looking forward to helping these players develop through the ranks into the Super Series teams, and potentially into the senior Irish squad. While I am not coaching a Super Series team this year – I will still be involved – and will take a keen interest in how the season unfolds, especially with new and exciting players joining the series.”

On what’s ahead for the women’s team this summer, Querl said:

“I’m very excited by the prospect of taking on Australia – the best women’s team in the world – in our own backyard this summer. Equally, the opportunity to travel to the West Indies for a much-anticipated series in June, is really thrilling.”

Richard Holdsworth, High Performance Director for Cricket Ireland, said:

“We are really pleased that Glenn has agreed to a three-year extension. What he has achieved so far in his relatively short coaching career is immense, having made the step up from our under-age system all the way through to his role within the Women’s senior side.

“We have a busy period ahead, with a tour to the Caribbean to face the West Indies in a multi-format series in June, along with a home ODI series against the world champions, Australia, in July as part of the Women’s Championship. The importance of our participation in the ICC Women’s Championship cannot be under-estimated in terms of experience, which is extremely crucial to their development as individual players and as a team. Those fixtures will then be followed by a tour to the Netherlands where the side will play a three-match T20I series in August.

“The senior squad has achieved much progress over the past few years and we need the momentum to continue. Keeping Glenn’s knowledge, skill and experience within the set-up is an important piece of the puzzle that will help us achieve this.”
