Ireland Men’s newly-appointed batting coach Gary Wilson will take a 12-player squad to Desert Springs in Spain for an intensive four-day batting camp as part of their pre-season preparations ahead of a busy 2022.

The squad will fly out on Sunday and will undertake two training sessions a day, with net and outfield practice most days, and range-hitting and gym work at various stages.

The squad players are:

Mark Adair, Ross Adair, Andrew Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, Barry McCarthy, William Porterfield, Simi Singh, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker.

Coaching and support staff: Gary Wilson, Simon Johnston, Darren Nicol

Speaking from home today, Gary Wilson, said:

“It’s just a great opportunity to get out on grass and what we’ve heard is a great facility – there are two nets and a centre-wicket that we’ll be utilising for four days next week, and we’re thoroughly looking forward to that. To get the guys back outdoors after 3 or 4 weeks purely indoors will help them hit the ground running when we get back to Ireland and start the season.”

“We’ll wait and see what the surfaces are like when we get out there to know how we want to approach training – there might be some spin-friendly surfaces there, which will allow us to work on our spin game. But we will be going out there looking to develop all aspects of our batters’ game – it’s just an excellent opportunity to get out on grass ahead of the season.

“Whilst the camp is primarily for our contracted players, we have added Ross Adair, as unfortunately he missed out on the Wolves tour to Namibia with Covid-19, but has now recovered.”
