This summer (2023) the Dutch women will play mutual duels in the so-called ‘Super League’. Players from the national team, former internationals, talented club cricketers and young prospects are divided into three teams with approximately 17 players per squad. The three teams play T10 and T20 matches against each other.

The teams have been given illustrious names: Northern Panthers, Southern Suns and Western Sharks. Heather Siegers will lead and coach the Northern Panthers. She is assisted by Abel Heymeijer. Babette de Leede becomes captain of the Southern Suns. Fazil Mahmoud will coach this team. Iris Zwilling becomes captain of the Western Sharks while Taku Kusano assumes coaching duties for this team.

“We are going to play T10 and T20 cricket because offensive batting and power hitting are two areas where Dutch women’s cricket can improve,” says women’s national coach Shane Deitz. “This way we can focus on those specific skills.”

“The KNCB is pleased with the launch of the Dutch Women’s Super League,” says Performance & Operations Manager Subir Shrestha. “This fits in with the KNCB’s ambition to further grow women’s cricket in the Netherlands. The best players will compete against each other in a three-team tournament. Hopefully, with competitive cricket we can close the gap between club cricket and international cricket. the matches are not only planned at the clubs that already have women’s cricket, but also at those clubs that have the ambition to grow women’s cricket and further increase the participation of women in their region.”
