The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the ICC One Day International status for the Dutch women’s team. This means that qualification for the world championship in 2025 is now possible.

At the end of 2021, the Netherlands played a World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe that was prematurely interrupted due to the outbreak of the omikron variant of the corona virus. The result was that the teams that had the highest ranking in the ODI ranking at a certain point before the tournament were allowed to go to the World Cup.

Countries such as Thailand, Scotland and the Netherlands, which had proven that they had made great strides in their development, had no chance of placement.

The ICC recently decided to grant ODI status to five countries as of May 1, 2022. In addition to the Netherlands, these are the United States, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Scotland. By playing matches against other countries that have ODI status, the Netherlands can rise in the world rankings and force placement for a World Cup qualifying tournament in the future.

Conditions are that the participating countries have a 40-over league and that they play at least eight one-day matches before the World Cup Qualifier (beginning 2025). The first three of these are already planned: the Netherlands will play against Ireland on 22, 24 and 26 August 2022 at VRA in Amstelveen and VCC in Voorburg.
