In this ‘Summer of Cricket’ it is not only the Dutch men who play spectacular matches against appealing opponents. The women’s team can also expect fantastic matches in the coming months. Both Namibia (five T20i’s on Hermes DVS and VCC) and Ireland (three ODI’s on VRA and VCC) will visit.

The Dutch women have been showing wonderful progress for several years in a row, including with the very first T20i win ever on Ireland in the summer of 2020. This progression did not go unnoticed, because in May 2022 the Netherlands was awarded the One Day Status from the ICC. That means that all players will make their ODI debut in August, when Ireland visits for three One Day Internationals.

T20Is against Namibia in June and July

But first Namibia will come to the Netherlands in June and July 2022 for five T20s. The two countries met once before: in September 2019 in Arbroath, Scotland. Iris Zwilling (3 for 11) and Heather Siegers (3 for 27) kept Namibia at 91-8 at the time. Thanks to Sterre Kalis (34) and Heather Siegers (21) again, the Orange passed that score in the eighteenth.

ODIs against Ireland in August

At the end of August, Ireland will visit the Netherlands for three One Day Internationals. Ireland and the Netherlands met several times in history. Three matches with ODI status date from 2006. One rained out and the other two were won by Ireland at the time.

FairBreak visiting in August/September

Finally, in August and September, a FairBreak team will visit three T20s at VRA in Amstelveen. FairBreak is an organization, founded by Australian Shaun Martyn, that fights for equal rights for men and women. The organization caused a stir by organizing a tournament in Dubai in May 2022 in which women from 35 different countries took part. Two Dutch players also participated in this tournament: Sterre Kalis and Babette de Leede.

National coach Shane Deitz: “We have a fantastic summer of cricket ahead of us with great opportunities in T20 and 50 overcricket for our own supporters. The girls have worked hard over the winter and early summer and are ready for the coming international summer .”

“Building on a great tour in Zimbabwe at the end of 2021, where the team showed that we can compete against teams higher up in the international rankings, we have another chance to play against good opponents at home.”

“Namibia, currently ranked higher than us, is a great challenge and one we look forward to. They are well prepared and have played a lot of international cricket lately, so this is going to be a tough run.”

“Later we will receive Ireland, against whom we have played a lot in the past year. They’ve won a few times, but we’ve made it difficult for them and will try to be on the right side of the win line this time.”

“Finally, playing against the FairBreak organization is fantastic. FairBreak has provided great opportunities for female players from Associate countries to showcase their skills against the best players in the world. Shaun Martyn and his team are inspiring female cricketers around the world. It is an honor to play against them a series of three matches that brings together women from all parts of the world. On the pitch, it’s another great opportunity for our players to show their skills to our home fans.”
