After a long winter of prolonged lockdowns and the arrival of spring, cricket registrations are now open, with local clubs and Woolworths Cricket Blast centres readying themselves for the start of the NSW cricket season later this month.

In anticipation for “Freedom Day” in NSW and the arrival of the state’s summer of cricket, Cricket NSW has created this free event which everyone – from novices to professionals, and singletons to families – can participate in.

“It’s been a challenging winter for everyone across NSW and the absence of community sport during this time has left a huge void in our lives,” Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said.

“With confirmation that cricket in NSW can return to play at the 80% fully vaccinated milestone, this Saturday’s Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket is the perfect opportunity for households across the state to get out in the backyard, driveway or hallway and have some fun as we count down to the start of the new cricket season together.”

During the 2020-21 summer, 440,620 people participated in a cricket program in NSW, with close to 200,000 playing with clubs as registered members. The sport’s state governing body is aiming to grow participation this summer, as people discover the social and health benefits of playing an outdoor sport like cricket.

“Cricket is part of the Australian DNA and is truly a sport for all, with a program to cater for everyone. Clubs and Woolworths Cricket Blast centres across NSW are currently taking registrations for the new season and if you’re after a fun, healthy, inclusive and safe activity to do this summer, play cricket,” Germon concluded.

Most creative wicket-taking celebration wins with Weber
As part of NSW’s Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket, Women’s Big Bash League naming-rights partner, Weber Barbecues, have provided a number of prizes for the most creative backyard cricket wicket-taking celebrations that occur during this Saturday’s state-wide event.

To be in the running to win the major prize of a Weber Spirit II E320 plus an all-new Weber Traveler or one of eleven $100 Weber.com vouchers, participants need to REGISTER HERE for the Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket and then post their video on the Cricket NSW Facebook Event page by 11.59pm AEDT on Saturday.

NSW’s Biggest Game of Backyard Cricket is supported by 7NEWS and 7Cricket, with the support of Cricket Australia, and is ahead of the summer of National Backyard Cricket for the LBW Trust, where all of Australia will come together to pick up a bat and ball for a good cause.
