The Cricket NSW Foundation travelled to Gunnedah last month to host a cricket clinic for 162 indigenous youth, in what was a vibrant day of sport and culture.

The Foundation’s Indigenous Youth Programs make cricket accessible to First Nations youngsters and combine enriching coaching experiences with connection to heritage and mob.

Jai Wilson, 11, opened the morning with an Acknowledgement to Country in Kamiliaroi and English, followed by performances from the Deadly Dance Academy, a group from Gunnedah South Public School.

Lady elders from the Winanga-Li Aboriginal Child and Family Centre also embraced the invitation to take part, providing cultural education on corroboree and traditional weaving techniques.

Current NSW and Australian Indigenous cricket team coach, Jeff Cook, and former NSW, Tasmanian and Australian cricketer, Jason Krejza, formed part of the team that directed action on the day.

This was the first of three similar programs to be funded by the Cricket NSW Foundation this season, with the objective of creating unique, holistic, and enjoyable opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to play and love cricket!
