Cricket South Africa (CSA) is expected to decide this week on whether the Test team will proceed with their tour to Bangladesh, scheduled for next month, which includes two matches.
This decision will hinge on security assessments amid ongoing anti-government protests in Bangladesh. The tour, originally set to start on October 21, will be evaluated in consultation with the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA).
Although the situation in Bangladesh is reported to have improved, CSA will proceed cautiously if any risks are identified in the security reports. The final decision will be made collectively rather than being left to individual players, reflecting the critical nature of the situation as South Africa has limited matches remaining in the World Test Championship cycle and is currently seventh on the points table.
South Africa has six Test matches remaining in the current World Test Championship cycle. So far, they have won 2, lost 3, and drawn 1 of their 6 games. To have a chance of qualifying for next year’s final, they need to win at least 5 of their remaining games.
While CSA acknowledges improvements in the situation in Bangladesh, there is still skepticism about the conditions on the ground, especially given that the Women’s T20 World Cup was relocated due to similar concerns. The decision-making process involves varying opinions within the team about participating in the tour.
Should the tour be canceled, South Africa plans to tour the UAE for a limited-overs series against Afghanistan and Ireland.
The final decision on the Bangladesh tour is expected by the end of this week, based on the security assessments. If the tour goes ahead, player selection for South Africa may be impacted by the anticipated absence of key fast bowlers Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee.
