Covid-19 might have disrupted the world, but it will not stop Joburg’s biggest road race from happening this year.
On Sunday 15th November 2020, Smile Foundation in collaboration with 947 Ride Joburg and Imperial Wanderers Stadium, will host a Smile Foundation 947 Ride Joburg Cyclethon, which you can do in an exciting large-scale class at Imperial Wanderers stadium (limited to 500 participants) or from the comfort of your own home (unlimited), while watching a world class stream.
A cycling instructor will lead and motivate the Cyclethon riders for 4 hours throughout their virtual 94 km 947 Ride Joburg race.
All riders will be linked virtually to the same race and will complete their 94km in their own time. Every rider will need to use the official App, Motosumo, to track and measure their 94 km ride to receive an official 2020 finish and medal.
Participants who choose to attend Smile Foundation 947 Ride Joburg Cyclethon at Imperial Wanderers will also receive their medal and goody bag. Refreshment stations will be available to the 500 participants who attend the Imperial Wanderers Stadium. This is to simulate water points during the not-so-virtual race. On top of it, this exciting event will be aired live via the 947 Ride Joburg Facebook pages.

“The people of Joburg are so generous with their support of this meaningful event, which has really become a firm favourite with families year in and year out. Not only is it a great way to celebrate the end of a disruptive year, but it helps generate funds that make a genuine, tangible difference in children’s lives, and I couldn’t think of anything that could be more rewarding than that,” says Fritz Pienaar, new owner and race organiser of 947 Ride Joburg.
The ticket sales of the riders who are undertaking this gruelling challenge, not just for the physical and mental stimulation will also be raising funds for Smile Foundation, which is wholeheartedly committed to catching up on the backlog of children’s reconstructive surgeries, that have been delayed due to the Lockdown.
“It is an absolute honour to partner with 947 Ride Joburg and Imperial Wanderers Stadium. The funds raised from this remarkably unique event will drastically change children’s lives. These critical contributions will help alleviate the backlog that has ensued and ensure children receive their long awaited and much needed surgeries. Through the 947 Ride Joburg race, children will have the chance to live a normal and healthy life, just like every child deserves,” says Hedley Lewis, CEO of Smile Foundation.
