Cricket South Africa (CSA) joins the nation in congratulating the South African national women’s team, Banyana Banyana on their fantastic Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) triumph in Morocco on Saturday.

Victory against the hosts Morocco has secured these heroines a place in our sporting history, and clinched a spot in the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Commenting on the Banyana Banyana victorious feat, CSA Chief Executive Officer, Pholetsi Moseki said: “Banyana Banyana have made an emphatic statement, in our beloved continent and across the globe that women’s sport in South Africa is a force to be reckoned with.

Their resilience, consistency and fortitude against worthy opponents has endeared them to all South Africans. “This demonstration of grit, flair and courage is a template of what we should expect Banyana Banyana to display at next year’s World Cup.

“CSA salutes these champions, confident that this win is but a taste of more to come. It is also an abiding lesson that winning is not an over-night event, but a process, grounded in motivation, patience, hunger, hard-work, and zeal,” concluded Moseki. CSA Board Chairperson, Lawson Naidoo said: “South Africa is now reaping the fruit of its focus on women’s sport. This victory is a confidence- booster for sport bodies to invest heavily in this untapped reservoir of talent.

“On behalf of the CSA Board, I congratulate these outstanding athletes for bringing this coveted trophy home, and making us all glow with pride. “A special salute to Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, for leading from the front and being named Africa’s Coach of the Year at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards in Morocco last Thursday.”
