Cricket South Africa (CSA) has congratulated Varsity Cricket Champions, University of Stellenbosch (Maties), after claiming the title for the first time ever.
Maties claimed a maiden varsity cricket title with a five-wicket victory over the North West University Eagles on Wednesday.
The Stellenbosch-based side had also thumped the Varsity Cricket tournament hosts and defending champions, University of Pretoria (Tuks), with an eight-wicket victory in the semi-final.
The Maties team boasts a well-balanced side with SA Under 19 Captain, George van Heerden, as one of the players who played a key role in the team’s consistent performance throughout the competition. His unbeaten 42 off 30 in the semi-finals and 35 off 28 proved to be crucial runs to take the maties side home.
Van Heerden also led the SA U19 side to the CSA T20 Knock Out Competition semi-final, taking place on Saturday, 08 October 2022.
In congratulating the 2022 champions, CSA Youth and Tertiary Cricket Manager, Niels Momberg, said;
“Congratulations to Maties in walking away with the honours at the Varsity Cricket Tournament.
“To defeat two previous champions in Tuks (University of Pretoria), and Eagles (North West University) is testimony to your resilience and hard work.
“Maties has invested in some talented players and in doing so established themselves as proud contributor to the CSA pipeline,” concluded Momberg.
