Cricket South Africa (CSA) governs cricket in South Africa. Formed in 2002, it succeeded the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) and became the sole governing body in 2008. CSA oversees all levels of cricket, including national teams for men and women, and is a full ICC member and SASCOC affiliate.

The Lions Cricket, Titans Cricket, Easterns Cricket and North West Cricket club’s cricket eco-systems have given birth to the clubs’ super league 50 over competition.

The initiative is to foster the importance of club cricket within South African cricket landscape. Furthermore, the idea behind the initiative is to increase the experience of club players as well as create a platform for high performance while recognizing the performances of clubs within each member structure.

The qualification criteria is three top teams from Lions and Titans premier leagues and two top teams from Easterns and North West. The teams are fixtures together to compete in the competition that will run from end of October to March 2024 around the four regions.

Lions Cricket Services Manager, Reuben Mandlazi commented,

“It is exciting times for club cricket in South Africa and we are looking forward to what will be a tough and hard-fought competition. I wish all the teams the best of luck. To those that made this concept come to life: You have given even greater hope to tomorrow’s superstars, giving them an additional platform on which to experience, enjoy and grow, and I know just how grateful every player, coach, administrator and caregiver will be for this opportunity.

Titans Cricket Services Manager, Charlotte Serwadi commented,

The Significant League serves as the opening event for the remaining domestic matches of the 2023/2024 Season, providing an opportunity for provincial and domestic selectors to assess the displayed talent. This kind of intense concentration is essential for club cricket since it is integral to our initiative of fostering club cricket as a pathway to provincial and domestic levels. We are also eager to retain older players in the game in order for them to transmit their expertise and abilities to a younger cohort.   Club cricket is the ideal place for this activity.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the four Chief Executive Officers, namely Dr. Jacque Faul, Jono Leaf-Wright, Ismail Minty, and Wesley Coulentianos, for their invaluable support of this remarkable endeavour. We have full confidence that this league will produce exceptional outcomes and provide athletes with the chance to demonstrate their skills against the top players from Top clubs throughout various provinces.

Easterns Cricket Manager, Colin Gxowa commented,

The Club Super League Cup creates a great opportunity for our clubs to be able to play clubs that are normally out of their jurisdiction. This will give us an indication of the standard of our premier league cricket in comparison to our neighbours.

We would also like to thank all the ten clubs for agreeing to take part in this inaugural event. The idea is to make this an annual tournament and we also like to thank the four unions for creating such a platform, where our clubs can showcase their god given skills. We will see the clubs playing across the four regions, Potchefstroom, Pretoria, Central Gauteng, and Ekurhuleni. The first game was scheduled to be played on the 28 October 2023 and the last fixture being the finals on the 23 March 2024. Meaning we have dedicated one weekend per month to Club Super League.

All the best to all teams involved and well done to the organisers.

Northwest Cricket Manager, Solomon Meki commented,

“We are extremely excited to have our top two premier league clubs forming part of the inaugural Club Super League competition. The competition is surely going to be next level in terms of club cricketers, and it will provide strength versus strength matchups amongst the participating premier league clubs from NWC, CGL, Titans Cricket, and Easterns Cricket.

We hope that NWU Cricket Club and Potchefstroom Cricket Club will showcase the strength of our premier league club structure by making it to the playoffs and hopefully to the final. We want to wish all the participating clubs, players, match officials, and administrators all the best for the upcoming Club Super League competition” said Solomon Meki (NWC – Cricket Services Manager).
