Nicky van den Bergh announced his retirement from cricket this week after 13 years.  Nicky is a former captain of the North West Dragons and has led the team through some very memorable and triumphant moments.  Nicky has played for, and captained, teams such as the Imperial Lions (now DP World Lions), South African Universities and most recently the North West Dragons, where he began his career and on a bitter sweet note ends his playing career.

Although Nicholas has retired from playing the game and will be missed on the field, he will however remain at North West Cricket as the new Chief Commercial Officer.  “My retirement from professional cricket and the transition into the CCO role is something that we have been discussing for a while and has been in the pipeline for a while.  I knew it was coming so the plan was always to retire during this off season.” Said Nicholas.  Nicky chuckles that even though the retirement was expected, it still came as a shock to him when the announcement was made.

Van den Bergh says that he is really looking forward to the next chapter and is thankful for the continued support from the cricketing community.  “I can continue my legal career and I am thankful to NWC for the opportunity to step into a new role as CCO, to be able to remain in cricket and see what North West can become.  I truly believe that NWC can be a force to be reckoned with, in South African cricket.”

“We at North West Cricket want to thank Nicky for the contribution he has made to cricket and to both the North West Dragons and the Lions.  We have not lost him totally as he will become the Chief Commercial Officer as of 1 September 2023.  We are looking forward to Nicky adding more value to NWC and the cricket fraternity.” Ismail Minty, North West Cricket CEO.
