The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the apex body of Indian cricket, has introduced new retention rules ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Under the new guidelines, franchises can retain up to six players, including the reintroduced provision for retaining one uncapped player.
Additionally, the BCCI has outlined price caps for retained players.
According to the rules, the first three retained players will receive INR 18 crore, 14 crore, and 11 crore, respectively. The next three players, including the uncapped player, will receive INR 18 crore, 14 crore, and 4 crore.
However, a recent update allows franchises to use their INR 75 crore retention funds with full flexibility, eliminating the mandatory price cap.
As reported by the Times of India, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are considering offering equal pay to their star players Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Jadeja has been with CSK since 2012, while Gaikwad, who succeeded MS Dhoni as captain in 2014, is seen as a key player for the team’s future.
Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy to allow Gaikwad time to be mentored under his guidance.
CSK aims to make strategic use of retention options to avoid missing out on the Right to Match (RTM) during the IPL 2025 auction. If CSK retains four players, the INR 18-crore price slab for two players will be mandatory.
However, if they choose to retain six players, they will forfeit their RTM options under the current rules. Jadeja was CSK’s highest-paid retention in the previous auction.
