Cricket West Indies (CWI) governs cricket across the West Indies, a confederation of Caribbean countries. Originally established as the West Indies Cricket Board of Control in the 1920s, it became the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in 1996 and was rebranded as Cricket West Indies in May 2017 as part of a restructuring effort.

Hayley Matthews stood at the non-striker’s end and enjoyed the entertainment as Deandra Dottin smashed the South Africa Women’s bowling in the super-over of the second One-Day International (ODI) on Monday. West Indies Women had just made 160 to tie the match, and Dottin took over the show and the visitors scored 25.

This was the second one-over eliminator for the West Indies Women against the Proteas in a ODI, following another epic finale in Antigua last September. Not to be left out the action after Dottin smashed 19 from the first five deliveries of the over –: 2, 4, 4, 6, 3. Matthews ensured they ran a three on the fifth ball for her to get strike, where she cracked the last ball over the ropes for a maximum!

Matthews said their plan was to score

“as many runs as possible no matter what”. “Obviously with her smoking the ball like she was doing, it kind of did hype me up and want to get in the action too and it worked out well in the end,” she added.

What Matthews saw from the non-striker’s end was mind-blowing.

“Going into the changing room to get ready, I remember almost hyperventilating with disbelief. When we got out there with Deandra on the other end, makes it easy for me to watch the show, enjoy what’s going on and feed off her energy,” she said.

On Tuesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Matthews has progressed four places to 11th position in the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings after a fine show in the first two matches of their four match-series. Matthews, who grabbed two wickets each in both matches, is the highest-ranked bowler from the West Indies with other off-spinner Anisa Mohammed in 25th place and Shakera Selman 27th. Fast bowler bowler Shamilia Connell has moved up five slots to 29th after taking three wickets in the two matches.
