About the job

As the National Governing Body for cricket in England and Wales, the ECB is responsible for leading the development of the game from playground to the test arena. Our ambition is to make cricket the most inclusive sport in the country, and to inspire a generation to say, “cricket is a game for me”.

The ECB is in the process of reforming its internal governance structures, including the creation of a new Sub-Committee of the ECB Board called “The Recreational Game Committee” (RGC). The purpose of the RGC will be to drive the success and growth of recreational cricket in all its forms for every community in England and Wales.

The first stage in the formation of this new board has concentrated on identifying and appointing five leaders from within the existing recreational county cricket network to join the Recreational Game Board. Interviews for this first stage are currently ongoing and are expected to conclude mid/late June.

We will now commence the second stage of the RGCs’ formation, seeking to appoint up to three additional individuals who bring to bear experience in the wider recreational game and/or recreational sport more broadly. We would encourage anyone who shares our ambition and has the capacity and expertise to help us enable our vision to apply.

We are purposefully developing a Committee with a range of roles, experience, tenure, and skillsets developed within the game, to ensure we have the diversity of thought, lived experience, and perspective to be as effective as possible. We are seeking people from a wide range of skills who are ready to use their professional and personal skills in a non-executive capacity, working together as a Board and with the relevant ECB executives to drive the success and growth of the recreational game.

In considering the complimentary skillsets and experiences required to ensure the success of the Committee, we are particularly interested to hear from individuals who can evidence experience in one or more of the following areas:

· Safe Sport and Welfare

· Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism

· Income Diversification and New Audience Engagement

· Financial Oversight and Scrutiny

Committee Members may additionally bring a wide variety of other professional skills and competencies from their wider careers.

The ECB recognises the benefits of greater diversity in its governance and is committed to ensuring an inclusive environment. We are keen to build a Committee that is representative of the game and wider society, and encourage all applications, includingbut not limited to from women, members of underrepresented ethnic communities, those from LGBTQ+ communities, as well as disabled people and across age ranges.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be founding members of a body that will have a strong voice and influence in the development and growth of recreational cricket and community engagement across England and Wales.

As a member of the RGC you will have the opportunity to play a key role in the leadership, progression, and oversight of recreational cricket at a national level, providing direction and guidance to the ECB’s strategic plans and long-term vision. You will steward, enable and advocate for the recreational game utilising your experience of cricket at a local level and contribute strategic thinking on game wide considerations. You will work closely with senior ECB leaders, Executive and Non-Executive, and have the opportunity to input to and collaborate with others from across the professional game and performance cricket space in relation to matters that cut across the whole game.

Successful candidates will evidence senior leadership experience of delivering ‘success’ at the grassroots level, who can support the sustainability and growth of the game both in terms of numbers and diversity, and will demonstrate an appreciation of and commitment to the need to work with a “whole-game mindset” to tackle the game’s biggest issues.

As strongly inclusive leaders, candidates will be proactive in considering the views and needs of others, show sound judgement, integrity, and independence of thought, and challenge the status quo. They will demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills to effectively represent and steward the recreational game across a complex map of cricket stakeholders. Collaborative and collegiate working will be integral.

Role details

As the RGC is only newly established, there may be scope for the precise nature of the role to develop and change over the first twelve months.

Anticipated time commitment: 5-8 days per year including 4 half day Committee Meetings and the time required to carry out engagement with the county network and other duties.

Location: The ECB head offices are located at Lord’s Cricket Ground, London, and committee meetings may be held here from time to time. However, we intend to create an inclusive, accessible Committee and so remote/hybrid meetings and/or meetings held at different locations around the country will also be the norm. Location and ability to travel will not be a barrier to applicants.

Term of office: Three years, renewable by agreement of the ECB Board for one further three-year term.

All positions are voluntary. Reasonable expenses will be paid in line with the ECB Expenses Policy.

Application and Process

The ECB will be supported in this appointment by executive search firm Perrett Laver.

The ECB is operating an anonymised shortlisting process for this position to ensure the most talented, suitable candidates who strongly align with our criteria are brought forward. Candidate suitability will be judged based on threshold criteria questions linked to the key skills for the role. In addition to a full Curriculum Vitae, the process asks candidates to submit responses to questions that will assess them against success in post. While Perrett Laver will have sight of both CV and application answers for veracity purposes, the ECB and Nominations Panel will only see the application answers. Therefore, these answers may not contain any identifying criteria, including name, current or past employers, etc.

The deadline for applications is 09:00am (BST) on Tuesday 20th June 2023.

Following this, an ECB appointment panel will review applications. Candidates will be invited to interview with the panel week commencing 3rd July 2023.
