A day after Mohammad Rizwan was named captain of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket team, reports confirmed that head coach Gary Kirsten has resigned.

Kirsten, the World Cup-winning coach, was appointed as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach in April 2024 and took on the role in mid-May after completing his assignment with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

According to reports, Kirsten will not be joining the team on their upcoming tour to Australia. Reports suggest significant disagreements between Kirsten and the players, including the PCB’s decision to decline Kirsten’s proposal to appoint David Reid as a High-Performance coach.

Instead, the PCB recommended alternative candidates, which Kirsten reportedly found unacceptable. During his tenure, Kirsten led Pakistan to two T20 victories against Ireland and Canada in the T20 World Cup, though the team suffered four losses in six matches under his leadership.

The PCB was considering options for Kirsten’s replacement, including Test team coach Jason Gillespie and former pacer and current selector Aaqib Javed, who is credited with Pakistan’s recent 2-1 Test series win over England.

The Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday announced Jason Gillespie will coach the Pakistan men’s cricket team on next month’s white-ball tour of Australia after Gary Kirsten submitted his resignation, which has been accepted.

In preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan’s schedule includes tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, as well as a home tri-series with New Zealand and South Africa.
