India head coach Gautam Gambhir will return to India due to “personal reasons.” According to a report, Gambhir is expected to rejoin the team ahead of the second Test, which starts in Adelaide on December 6. India, fresh from a 295-run victory in the first Test in Perth, will travel to Canberra on Wednesday for a two-day pink-ball tour match.
The practice game against the Prime Minister’s XI is scheduled for Saturday, November 30. It remains uncertain if Gambhir will oversee the game.
In Gambhir’s absence, assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, along with bowling coach Morne Morkel and fielding coach T Dilip, will manage training sessions in coordination with captain Rohit Sharma.
The Indian Express quoted a source saying, “Gambhir has informed us that he will be travelling back home and will join the team before the start of the second Test. He has cited personal reasons, and the BCCI has accepted his request.”
Rohit Sharma, who missed the Perth Test due to the birth of his second child, arrived in Australia on Sunday and was seen alongside Gambhir in the dressing room on Day 4 of the Test.
During the lunch break on Day 4, Rohit practiced with the pink ball in the nets. Former Australian batter David Warner noted, “And just during the lunch break here at the nets, we’ve got captain of India Rohit Sharma, who’s just arrived in the country. He is looking nice and sharp against his fellow countrymen here in the nets.”
India leads the five-match series 1-0 and will now prepare for the day-night Test in Adelaide, starting December 6.
