Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar praised Cricket Australia and Glenn McGrath for their charitable efforts in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer. The Sydney Test has long been dedicated to this cause, with proceeds supporting the McGrath Foundation, an organization founded by McGrath after his wife’s passing from breast cancer. The foundation focuses on treatment and awareness, with McGrath actively involved in its initiatives, often inviting prominent figures to participate.
Gavaskar urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to adopt a similar initiative in the upcoming home season. As the wealthiest cricket board globally, Gavaskar suggested that the BCCI collaborate with foundations led by former Indian players to create impactful charitable programs.
“Glenn McGrath and Cricket Australia should be lauded for coming forward for a noble cause. McGrath Foundation in Australia, and we also have a day dedicated to charity in England under the wings of ECB. There is a Bob Willis Day in Birmingham, and Lord’s also manages a similar program,” he said.
“BCCI should learn from Australia and England and should dedicate a day of Test cricket to charity. They can tie up with one of the foundations of the former Indian players. People think that BCCI is only concerned about money, and this is because their good work is not famous among the general masses.
“They gave pensions to former players and started WPL for the women cricketers. They also make donations to various fields. However, the people in India are not aware of the steps taken by the BCCI. The new home season would be a perfect time to start a noble initiative,” he added.
