Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh warned the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of potential chaos, responding to India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar‘s viral suggestion about making Jasprit Bumrah the captain for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. This comes amid uncertainty over Rohit Sharma’s availability for the first match against Australia in Perth.
Earlier this month, in an interview, Gavaskar advised that chief selector Ajit Agarkar should appoint Bumrah as captain for the entire Australia series, given the uncertainty over Rohit’s absence. He argued that consistent leadership would aid decision-making and that Rohit should join as a player once available, not as captain.
Harbhajan addressed the topic, taking a swipe at social media’s fickleness. He remarked that internet fans often change loyalties swiftly, predicting chaos if India wins under Bumrah in Perth before Rohit rejoins. He suggested that fans could clamor for Bumrah to remain captain or, if India loses under both Bumrah and Rohit, demand Virat Kohli’s return to leadership.
“If you win the first two Tests, then all Indians would want Bumrah to remain as captain. On the contrary, if India lose both of those games, they would want Rohit to return. We change sides very quickly. I’m not talking about Sunny sir here; I’m talking about the general public. I feel it’s a great suggestion to have one captain for the entire series. That would be better. If India lose, nobody will question it. However, if India win and Rohit returns for the subsequent matches and then the team lose, that will spark a whole different scenario. But if India lose under both Rohit and Bumrah, they might want Virat Kohli as captain,” Harbhajan said.
Pressed further about Gavaskar’s idea, Harbhajan conceded, “It might not be a bad idea. There shouldn’t be any problem as well because Bumrah has the ability to lead a team.”
Reports confirm that Rohit, who welcomed his second child on Friday, will miss the Perth opener but informed the BCCI he would be available for the second Test in Adelaide. He is set to participate in a two-day pink ball warm-up match before the Test on November 30.
