The Hobart Hurricanes are pleased to announce the re-signing of 25-year-old batter, Mac Wright, on a one-year deal ahead of BBL|13.

The deal – which was confirmed during the League’s retention week – will see Wright suit up for his fifth season in purple.

Despite having limited opportunities during BBL|12 due to the depth of the Hurricanes batting line up, Wright pounced when he seized his opportunity of a call-up late in the season.

In what ended up being the Hurricanes’ final game of the season in Launceston, Wright top-scored for the match in what turned out to be a low-scoring thriller against the Heat.  Wright’s run-a-ball 56 on a tricky batting wicket ended up being a crucial knock, keeping the Hurricanes Finals hopes alive at that point in time.

“We really liked what we saw from Mac last season,” said Hurricanes head coach, Jeff Vaughan.  “He was obviously in a tricky position on our list where he was in and out of the squad, and didn’t get a whole lot of playing opportunities.”

“But he worked diligently at training, and when he did get that opportunity, he took it, which was a really encouraging sign for us.

“Unfortunately, that match in Launceston ended up being our last game of the season so we didn’t get to see any more from him in the 20-over format, but his form throughout the rest of the domestic season for the Tigers ended up being pretty consistent as well, which I think is a sign of only more good things to come from Mac.

“Mac is 100% one of our long-term prospects across both the Hurricanes and Tigers programs, so we can’t wait to see what he’s got for us this season,” Vaughan concluded.

Wright – who is currently over in the UK playing for East Molesey Cricket Club in the Surrey Championship Premier Division – said he was excited at the prospect of another year with the Hurricanes.

“I’m thrilled to secure a Hurricanes contract again this season,” Wright said.  “As a batter, it’s been not only a tough playing XI but a tough squad to break into over the past few years, so to get that opportunity again is really encouraging.”

“The feedback I got from the coaching staff at the end of last season was really positive – in terms of what I need to keep working on I am heading in the right direction to play the role the team needs me to, so if I keep working as I have been, I’m hopeful I’ll have the opportunity to contribute more this season.”

Wright joins Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Peter Hatzoglou, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake and Matthew Wade as Hurricanes currently contracted for BBL|13.

In other Big Bash news, yesterday the League has announced the results of the Lottery ahead of the upcoming BBL and WBBL Overseas Player Drafts.

In the weighted Lottery, the Hurricanes received pick three in the BBL Draft, and a best-possible pick five for the first-ever WBBL Draft.

Both the WBBL|09 and BBL|13 Overseas Player Drafts will be held on Sunday 3 September, broadcast on Fox Cricket.
