The Hobart Hurricanes are excited to announce that one of the breakout players of Weber WBBL|07, Ruth Johnston, has signed a new deal with the club, which will see her remain in purple until at least 2024.

Johnston was little known outside of her home state of Queensland prior to the start of WBBL|07 but come the end of the season it was a different story, with the teenager finishing in the top four in the Hurricanes WBBL Player of the Tournament vote count.

In her debut WBBL season, Johnston played in all but one of the Hurricanes fixtures, finishing as the Hurricanes’ third-highest run-scored (214) and equal second-highest wicket-taker (13) for the season.  Her season – and career – best figures of 4-8 off just 3.2 overs with the ball came against the Melbourne Stars, and included the scalps of Irish international, Kim Garth, and Australian captain, Meg Lanning.

“I’m really excited to be coming back to the Hurricanes this season and next,” Johnston said of her two-year deal.

“Last year it was such a thrill to even get a contract, so to know where I’m going to be playing my WBBL cricket for at least the next two years is great, and it means I can just focus on improving my game.

“After the WBBL, I had a frustrating rest of the 2021-22 season with injury, but the good news is that now I have my body right, and I’m raring to go this season.”

Johnston joins Nicola Carey, Maisy Gibson, Heather Graham, Amy Smith, Molly Strano, and Rachel Trenaman as players currently contracted for WBBL|08.
