IPL 2025 Schedule: No change in number of matches

Must Read

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has decided against its earlier proposal to expand the number of matches for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Although there had been discussions about increasing the match count by 10 to a total of 84, the league will continue with the 74-match format, similar to the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The IPL Governing Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opted not to increase the number of matches, primarily due to concerns about the workload of India’s international cricketers, who already face a demanding schedule.

A  report confirmed that IPL 2025 will consist of 74 matches. This decision was influenced by the hectic upcoming schedule for Indian players, which includes 10 Test matches, the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 final, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The proposal for an expanded tournament emerged when media rights were sold two years ago, generating excitement among fans and stakeholders. However, managing the packed international calendar proved challenging, particularly as top players must balance IPL commitments with national responsibilities.

The BCCI recognized the difficulties of launching an 84-match IPL season next year, as the tournament is expected to conclude around May 25. With the WTC 2023-25 final scheduled for June 11, and India likely to qualify, the BCCI aims to ensure that players arrive in London at least a week before the final to adequately prepare.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated, “We have not taken a call on organizing 84 matches in IPL 2025 since we also have to factor the load on the players due to the increase in matches. While it’s (84 matches) part of the contract, it’s up to the BCCI to decide whether to organize 74 or 84 matches.”

In a significant deal two years ago, the IPL solidified its status as one of the world’s leading sporting leagues, with media rights sold for an impressive ₹48,390.5 crores. The number of matches played each season directly affects the allocation of games in Package C.

Package C was a critical component of the agreement between the BCCI and Disney STAR (TV rights) and Viacom18 (digital rights). This package includes digital rights within India and features high-profile matches, including the IPL playoffs and final, with between 18 and 22 matches showcased each season.
