Owners of Indian Premier League franchises are expected to meet with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by the end of this month to discuss plans for the IPL 2025 mega auction. According to Cricbuzz, the meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 30 or 31, with the BCCI requesting team owners to be present. Although the exact date has yet to be confirmed, the meeting is likely to be held at the BCCI office in Mumbai.
The primary focus of the meeting will be player retention. There are differing opinions on how many players each franchise should be allowed to retain. Some argue that a maximum of eight retentions should be permitted, given that many franchises have been in existence for over 17 years. They believe that retaining key players is crucial for fan engagement and brand building.
Conversely, other franchises contend that the number of retentions should be minimal. There is also ongoing debate about whether the Right to Match (RTM) option should be available during the mega auction.
Additionally, the discussion will cover the players’ salary cap. The salary cap is expected to be around ₹120 crore in the first year of the next cycle. Earlier, the salary of the top retention was around 16-17 per cent of the salary cap. If the same method is followed, the salary of the top retention could be around more than ₹20 crore.
