Jasprit Bumrah made a strong return for India, taking four wickets for 50 runs against Bangladesh in the first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on September 20. This marked his first game since the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Barbados on June 29.
Bumrah was the leading wicket-taker for India in the first innings. Earlier, batting at No. 10 on the second day, he scored seven runs from nine balls, including one boundary, and was the last Indian wicket to fall. Notably, he used an unsponsored bat, drawing attention. After play, Bumrah humorously remarked that he might now be looking for a bat deal after scoring some runs.
“I have scored some runs now. If anyone is looking, they know how to contact me,” Bumrah said in a message to bat sponsors.
Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the 2023 WTC final against Australia due to a back injury, claimed India’s first wicket in Bangladesh’s second innings. He dismissed opener Zakir Hasan for 33 runs, caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal on the second ball of the 17th over.
This wicket brought Bumrah’s 2024 tally to 47 wickets across 14 matches, the highest by any bowler this year. The 30-year-old has taken 15 wickets in 8 T20Is and 32 wickets in 6 Tests so far in 2024. He is currently second on the list of bowlers with the most Test wickets in 2024, behind England’s Gus Atkinson, who leads with 34 wickets in six Tests.
