Legendary Pakistan spinner and former head coach of the men’s national team Saqlain Mushtaq will take up the position of Spin Bowling Coach for Multan Sultans ahead on the 9th iteration of the Pakistan Super League.
Saqlain Mushtaq, a pioneer in spin bowling, was the first off-spinner to perfect the art of the “doosra” and employed it to great effect throughout an illustrious career playing for Pakistan.
As a coach, Saqlain has continued to be a trendsetter in the field of spin bowling. He has previously held various coaching roles with international and domestic squads in England, West Indies, Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, along with coaching Pakistan, and more notably, winning the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup in 2019 as England’s spin bowling coach.
Saqlain Mushtaq will be joined by Alex Hartley as Assistant Spin Bowling Coach. The former England international player won the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup with England and has been involved in coaching at county levels.
Alex is set to develop her coaching credentials under the mentorship of Saqlain Mushtaq, while bringing her experience as a left-arm orthodox spin bowler to the Multan Sultan’s squad.
Speaking about the announcement Multan Sultan CEO Ali Khan Tareen said, “Alongside player development, working with top Pakistani coaching talent, alongside strong global coaches, is a top priority for Multan Sultans.
Having a coach of Saqlain Mushtaq’s stature join us at Multan Sultans is exciting for the franchise. His coaching expertise has been transformational wherever he has worked, and we eagerly anticipate witnessing his collaboration with our players and the broader coaching team. We are equally pleased to welcome Alex Hartley as assistant spin bowling coach – she will be a great asset to the team.”
“I am honoured to be a part of Multan Sultans, joining such a great lineup of coaching staff. I am excited to work with the players, our youngsters, and to nurture their talent as a team mentor.” – said Saqlain Mushtaq, on his appointment.
On joining the Multan Sultans, Alex Hartley said, “It’s a privilege to be on board. As a former women’s international, to be recognised and given the chance to work in the men’s game speaks volumes for the progress of women’s cricket. It’s also a demonstration of the forward-thinking leadership at MS”
Saqlain Mushtaq and Alex Hartley join head coach Abdul Rehman and fast bowling coach Catherine Dalton at the Multan Sultans.
