Lions Cricket aims to foster a deep passion for cricket by advancing the sport through high-quality teams, nurturing club and school cricket, and providing a premier stadium experience. The organization also seeks to use cricket to drive inclusive and sustainable economic, social, and environmental change.

Lions Cricket take tremendous pride in the Unions powerful pipeline. One of the key tournaments of the pipeline is the Provincial Mini Cricket Festival to be held at Trinity House on 28 October 2023.

Mini Cricket is one of the largest grassroots development sports programme in South Africa and an essential building block for the learning of the cricketing basics and entrenching a love for the game. From Sedibeng to Midrand, Lions Cricket has in excess of 200 schools participating in the programme with the aim of growing the programme and significantly increasing number of schools, learners as well as coaches involved.

Mini Cricket coordinator for Lions Cricket Takatso Mkhwanazi says that the programme introduces cricket not only to the kids but also to the amazing teachers that have turned into volunteer coaches;

“Through the Mini Cricket Coaching Courses, we equip the volunteer coaches with the basic knowledge of coaching, umpiring, and scoring. Which lays the perfect platform for hardball coaching should they aspire to grow themselves in that field. Over the years, the programme has produced great leaders on and off the field. The likes of Karabo Meso and Refiloe Moncho who represented SA U19 in the inaugural U19 Women’s World Cup are a great example of such. These ladies started playing Mini Cricket at Elkah Cricket Stadium in Soweto.”

On the 28th of October 2023, Lions Cricket will be hosting the annual Provincial Mini Cricket Festival. The festival aims to host over 1200 kids and 120 coaches from various areas in Central Gauteng. Held at Trinity House Little Falls the festival seeks to get kids to have a day filled with cricket, laughter and fun. Although the day is mostly for kids to showcase their cricketing skills, the Lions Cricket Coaches will also be there coaching the volunteer coaches.

“The Lions Men and Women players will also be in attendance which serves as a huge inspiration for tomorrows superstars, which at the end of the day, is what it’s all about,” concludes Cricket Services Manager for Lions Cricket, Reuben Mandlazi.
