The Melbourne Renegades have signed Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu for the remainder of the WBBL|08 season.

Athapaththu returns for a third season with the Renegades – having made her WBBL debut for the club in WBBL|03 – after representing the Perth Scorchers last summer.

The 32-year-old is an aggressive, left-handed batter with six ODI centuries and one T20I century to her name from 196 international matches.

She will join the squad following Monday’s match against the Adelaide Strikers as an overseas replacement player for Harmanpreet Kaur, taking the place of English batter Eve Jones.

We’re thrilled to have Chamari returning to our club and back in red for the remainder of WBBL|08,” Melbourne Renegades General Manager, James Rosengarten, said.

We needed to add another aggressive player to our batting line-up in Harmanpreet’s absence and Chamari is a perfect fit. She brings a wealth of experience at international level and is a player capable of taking the game away from the opposition quickly.

We look forward to her joining us and playing her first game in Ballarat next weekend, which will be our first match in Victoria in more than 1000 days.

The Renegades have a 1-2 record following their opening three games, with a win against the Adelaide Strikers followed by a pair of defeats against the Brisbane Heat.

Melbourne Renegades memberships and tickets to all WBBL matches are now on sale. Tickets are priced at $10 for Adults and free for Under 18s.
