The Melbourne Renegades have secured the first pick in the KFC BBL|12 Draft, which has been confirmed to take place on Sunday 28 August.

Two weighted lotteries were undertaken on Wednesday to determine the order of selections.

Landing the first pick overall means the Renegades will also have access to picks 9, 24 and 25.

“Securing the opening pick of the draft is a huge coup for our club,” Melbourne Renegades General Manager, James Rosengarten, said.

“We’ve invested a significant amount of time in our draft planning and wider list management strategy over the off-season, to ensure we build a team capable of rising up the BBL ladder.

“Recruiting the right overseas players to complement our local talent will be critical to that ambition.

“Having the opening pick means we can attack the draft with a really clear plan, not just in terms of that specific selection, but also how we utilise our remaining picks to best build our squad.

“It’s also fantastic news for our members and fans, who can add a big-name overseas recruit to the many reasons to be excited about home matches at Marvel Stadium and GMHBA Stadium this summer.”

After missing the KFC BBL|11 Finals, the Renegades (three entries), Brisbane Heat (two entries) and Melbourne Stars (one entry) were placed in the first lottery. The remaining clubs, who all played Finals last season, were entered in the second lottery.

The Draft will include four rounds, with clubs to select a minimum of two and maximum of three players in total. Clubs must pass in at least one round.

Clubs can add up to four replacement overseas players following the draft, from players who nominated for the draft but went unselected.

Over 170 players have nominated for the Draft to date, with many of these players still be announced by Cricket Australia.

The draft will be broadcast on Fox Cricket and Kayo Sports, following Australia’s ODI against Zimbabwe in Townsville.
