The Melbourne Stars are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of cricketing legend and former Stars captain, Shane Warne, aged 52.

The Stars extend their condolences to Shane’s children, Jackson, Summer and Brooke. We also extend our deepest sympathies to Warne’s many friends and colleagues around the world who had the pleasure of spending time with him.

Warne was the Stars’ marquee player in BBL|01 and took over the captaincy in BBL|02. He played an instrumental role in the establishment and growth of not only the Melbourne Stars, but the Big Bash League as a whole.

After retiring ahead of BBL|03, Warne continued to impart his knowledge to Stars players past and present, as well as the fans at home watching on TV.

Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch said:

“The Melbourne Stars would not be where we are today as a club if it wasn’t for the tremendous work of Shane Warne. His presence among his teammates helped establish the Big Bash League and his legacy will live on. It’s an incredibly sad day for all who knew Shane but we are especially thinking of his 3 children, our hearts go out to them.”

Melbourne Stars Coach and former teammate David Hussey said:

“Warnie was a larger than life character and to play with him at the Stars was an honour and a privilege. Not only was he a wonderful teammate but he was always giving of his time for others including his family, friends, media, and his many fans around the world. He leaves an incredible legacy in the game of cricket across all three formats but we are especially thinking of his immediate family and friends.”
