Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali is preparing to begin a new chapter after retiring from international cricket. According to reports from The Telegraph, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) plans to fast-track Moeen into a coaching role.
The ECB is expected to offer Moeen opportunities within the national pathway programme, aiming to utilize his all-round skills to mentor the next generation of players. Although Moeen intends to focus on his personal life, the ECB sees him as a valuable asset for developing young talent.
Originally, Moeen was set to be a coaching consultant for the England U19 team during the tri-series against Ireland and Scotland, starting Thursday. However, those plans changed when he received an offer to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The ECB is in discussions with Moeen, valuing his leadership qualities highly.
The ECB is closely monitoring Moeen’s schedule, especially after his recent signing with the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL. They are looking for a suitable time when he can contribute to the pathway programme, potentially working with England Under-19s or England Lions.
After announcing his retirement from international cricket, Moeen Ali expressed his interest in coaching the team. He shared his enthusiasm, saying:
“Coaching is something I want to do – I want to be one of the best. I can learn a lot from Baz [Brendon McCullum]. I hope people remember me as a free spirit. I played some nice shots and some bad shots, but hopefully, people enjoyed watching me.”
The initiative to fast-track former players into the England setup is driven by managing director Rob Key. Earlier this year, Key hinted at Moeen’s potential involvement in coaching, stating: “Moeen Ali I think will be an excellent coach.”
England has recently integrated former players into the Test setup. James Anderson, who retired from Test cricket in July, immediately transitioned into a role as fast-bowling coach and will also be part of the series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
Andrew Flintoff has also been involved in coaching, working as a consultant with the England Under-19s and the national side before being appointed head coach of the England Lions last week.
Additionally, Graeme Swann and Ian Bell have been part of the coaching team for the England Lions this year. Moeen Ali’s future in the England coaching setup remains to be seen.
