The New Zealand national cricket team, known as the Black Caps, made their Test debut in 1930 against England in Christchurch, becoming the fifth nation to play Test cricket. After waiting 26 years for their first Test win against the West Indies in 1956, they also played their first ODI in 1972–73 against Pakistan. New Zealand are the inaugural World Test Championship champions (2021) and have won the ICC Champions Trophy (2000). They have reached the Cricket World Cup final twice and the T20 World Cup final once.

Former BLACKCAPS star Andre Adams has signed on for another tour as WHITE FERNS bowling coach for the upcoming tour to South Africa.

Adams, who last toured with the team in 2017, has spent recent years making an impact across the ditch in his coaching roles with the Australian Men, New South Wales and the Men’s Sydney Sixers.

Adams represented the BLACKCAPS 47 times (42 ODIs, four T20Is, one Test) and played a total of 173 first-class games across New Zealand and England.

WHITE FERNS coach Ben Sawyer has worked alongside Adams in T20 franchise coaching roles and was confident he would make a positive impact on the group.

“Andre’s depth of experience as a former BLACKCAP and a high-level coach in New Zealand and Australia made him a really obvious choice for this tour,” he said.

“He brings great energy and more importantly a great skillset, particularly focussed on fast-bowling.”

Adams said he was relishing the opportunity to be back in the WHITE FERNS group.

“I had a wonderful experience with the team back in 2017 and I’m really grateful for the opportunity to work with this group again,” he said.

“There’s a few familiar faces that it’s been cool to reconnect with, as well as some younger players who I’ve actually worked with before during NZC talent pathways programmes.

“I’m looking forward to returning to South Africa and I hope to bring a lot to the group, and especially offer good support to the quicks.”

Head of Women’s High Performance Liz Green said she’s excited to welcome Andre back into the WHITE FERNS programme.

“Attracting someone of high calibre like Andre is exciting, and his knowledge of being in and around New Zealand environments will be hugely beneficial for the group,” she said.

“We want the best coaches in front of our players, and it is great to have a kiwi legend back involved with cricket on this side of the ditch.”

Sawyer said tour coaches provide advantageous insights into touring conditions and technical skills.

“Tour coaches have proved valuable in not only preparing us for the conditions but also bringing a fresh perspective.

“We’re really open to hearing different voices in the WHITE FERNS and learning as much as we possibly can.

“Andre is going to add a lot to the group and it’s great to welcome him back into the team.”
