The New Zealand national cricket team, known as the Black Caps, made their Test debut in 1930 against England in Christchurch, becoming the fifth nation to play Test cricket. After waiting 26 years for their first Test win against the West Indies in 1956, they also played their first ODI in 1972–73 against Pakistan. New Zealand are the inaugural World Test Championship champions (2021) and have won the ICC Champions Trophy (2000). They have reached the Cricket World Cup final twice and the T20 World Cup final once.

After eight years, NZC has decided to move its grassroots participation platform requirements away from CricHQ and to Australian-based provider PlayHQ.

NZC Head of Community Cricket Kent Stead said, after a number of years listening to feedback and investigating alternative platforms with Cricket Australia, it was decided this was the right time for a move.

“It’s an important development for Community Cricket in New Zealand and one that will support NZC’s ongoing work to be an “insights and data led” sport,” said Mr Stead. “PlayHQ will be the platform used for player and programme registrations, competition management, live scoring and club management from the 2022/23 season onwards.”

Mr Stead acknowledged that, in terms of such a significant change, there would need to be support and onboarding provided for all levels of cricket.

“We have discussed at length the platform support and onboarding that will be available over the next three months leading up to registrations opening on August 1st. This will take many forms, from in-person workshops and webinars, to “how to” guides and in-programme prompts and cues.

“I’m sure there will be plenty of questions, and there will be plenty of time to ask these over the coming weeks,” he said.

“This is a significant step forward for the digital support of community cricket and NZC is excited about its potential.”
