The New Zealand national cricket team, known as the Black Caps, made their Test debut in 1930 against England in Christchurch, becoming the fifth nation to play Test cricket. After waiting 26 years for their first Test win against the West Indies in 1956, they also played their first ODI in 1972–73 against Pakistan. New Zealand are the inaugural World Test Championship champions (2021) and have won the ICC Champions Trophy (2000). They have reached the Cricket World Cup final twice and the T20 World Cup final once.

New Zealand Cricket’s Māori Secondary Schoolboys and Schoolgirls will face a new challenge in January 2023 – that of the newly formed Pasifika Schoolboy and Schoolgirl teams.

To be hosted at Ōrākei from the 23rd-25th January, Māori and Pasifika teams will play against each other what is designed to be celebration of culture and cricket.

The initiative will offer a pathway for cricketers of Pasifika descent to showcase their skills on the national stage.

Coach Garry Wood said he has enjoying being involved with the Pasifika teams.

“I’ve really liked the attitude and the vibe that the Pasifika players bring to the game,” said Wood.

“The players add a lot of value to trainings and are very competitive – but are always having fun and enjoying themselves.

“My hope is that this helps creates opportunities for Pasifika players to travel the world and enjoy a career in cricket.”

NZC’s Diversity & Inclusion Lead, Andrew Tara, said connecting with Pasifka culture is important for cricket.

“This initiative aims to develop the pathways available for Pasifika cricketers,” said Tara.

“We’re looking forward to seeing a celebration of Māori and Pasifika cricket and culture in Ōrākei come January.”

NZC is welcoming whanau and friends to “Whānau Fun Day” – Tuesday 24th January, when activities such as Smash Play and Kilikiti will be available, as well as a free Sausage Sizzle and Giveaways.

Team announcements will follow in early January.
