The New Zealand national cricket team, known as the Black Caps, made their Test debut in 1930 against England in Christchurch, becoming the fifth nation to play Test cricket. After waiting 26 years for their first Test win against the West Indies in 1956, they also played their first ODI in 1972–73 against Pakistan. New Zealand are the inaugural World Test Championship champions (2021) and have won the ICC Champions Trophy (2000). They have reached the Cricket World Cup final twice and the T20 World Cup final once.

The Northland Cricket Association (NCA) recently hosted a two day Balance is Better Hui at Cobham Oval.

Sport NZ leads Andrew Hewetson, Alex Chiet and Dillion Boucher facilitated the Balance is Better hui in support of the Northland Sports Coalition (NSC) who are leading change on behalf of the regional sports organisations for Te Tai Tokerau and the Sport and Recreation Sector.

11 regional sports organisations supported the Hui along with Sport NZ, Sport Northland and NorthTec.

Both days were well attended with some fantastic energy, sharing, collaboration and planning towards creating positive change within our Northland Sport and Recreation Sector.

Balance is Better is an evidence-based approach. The focus of the philosophy is on why young people play sport – to have fun, be challenged, develop and improve, be part of a team or group, and enjoy time with friends.
