The New Zealand national cricket team, known as the Black Caps, made their Test debut in 1930 against England in Christchurch, becoming the fifth nation to play Test cricket. After waiting 26 years for their first Test win against the West Indies in 1956, they also played their first ODI in 1972–73 against Pakistan. New Zealand are the inaugural World Test Championship champions (2021) and have won the ICC Champions Trophy (2000). They have reached the Cricket World Cup final twice and the T20 World Cup final once.

NZC will commence recruitment for a WHITE FERNS selector in June following the completion of Jason Wells’ contract earlier this month.

Wells, a former Wellington domestic player, has been in the role since August 2019, assisting with selection across all WHITE FERNS and Female Pathway squads for bilateral tours, world events and central contracting.

Head of Women’s High Performance Liz Green thanked him for his tenure.

“Jase has brought a huge passion and commitment to the job and we’re grateful for his contributions over the past five years,” said Green.

“He felt the time was right to step aside and allow for a fresh direction.

“We’re supportive of Jase’s decision and grateful for his hard work and years of service.”

Wells said he looks forward to watching the WHITE FERNS as a fan.

“I’m really pleased with the progress the WHITE FERNS have made over the last few years and I’m looking forward to watching them continue to progress over the coming years as a fan.”

Dean Brownlie (WHITE FERNS batting coach) and Sara McGlashan (NZC Female Pathways Coach) will provide head coach Ben Sawyer with additional support on selection on an interim basis, with NZC aiming to confirm the new selector ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in October.
